THE DREAM TAX
OBJECTIVE
To design a 4 page story on a topic that is important to you.
PROCESS
I decided to focus on my dad and his personal beliefs for these spreads - he's never had a dream and continues to disregard the importance of having one to this day, but that's largely due to other priorities he's had his whole life. The design is built entirely around him: his favourite colour, orange; his favourite activity, being out in nature or in the water; his favourite people, his family; and even his handwriting for the pull-quote. "HK" is a feature on the first page because it's the nickname he was given when he arrived to Canada and other people had trouble pronouncing his name.
TAKEAWAYS
Through this project, I learned a lot about working with grids and columns for typesetting structure, and also gained a lot of great exposure to various elements of publication design (including, but not limited to, pull-quotes, captions, page numbers, decks, and running foots).
